Elizabeth Taylor Jewelry Auction Sets World Record

The Christie's New York auction of Elizabeth Taylor's jewelery collection set an all-time record. Her collection of jewels achieved a total of $115.9 million which made it the most valuable private collection of jewels ever sold at auction.

Of the 80 jewels, 24 sold for more than $1 million. Six were auctioned for more than $5 million.

Among the most notable pieces was a pearl called “La Peregrina,” in a beautiful Cartier setting custom designed for Taylor was purchased for $11.8 million by an anonymous buyer.

This 16th century pearl, found in the Gulf of Panama was once one of the crown jewels of Spain. Its size is equivalent to 50 carats. Richard Burton, Taylor's ex-husband gave her the pearl in 1969. He payed $37,000 for it at auction. Taylor called this jewel “the most perfect pearl in the world.”
